Prior to my #gettinafteroz vacation, 8 weeks ago I went on a financially irresponsible trip to Barnes & Noble. So far I have finished two of these boss lady books.

IS EVERYONE HANGING OUT WITHOUT ME? (AND OTHER CONCERNS) Mindy Kaling

Mindy is a little all over the place or so you think during the first few chapters of the book. But as cliche as it is, she is just like every other girl. She wants to be loved and unlike a lot of girls she knows what she is looking for. Kaling knows herself seriously well, she loves herself and she may be looking for a man but she is no way needs one.

The self aware nature that she writes in is hilarious, especially when she talks about her younger self. I think girls need more role-models like Mindy who aren't afraid to stick to their values in a modern world but at the same time are understanding of girls who are challenging societal norms. I highly recommend this quick read for a beach day, a cabin weekend or your morning bus ride.

UGANDA BE KIDDING ME Chelsea Handler

If you have read and enjoyed any of Chelsea's other books then inevitably you have enjoy this one. If you haven't read Handler's other works but you enjoy an adult beverage, laughing at sexual tension, live for travel then this book is probably for you. I even caught my male friend MF reading this one over my shoulder on our train ride home from Katoomba in Australia.

AND SPEAKING OF CHELSEA, did anyone hear?

Well as much as we might miss her on CHELSEA LATELY I am sure we are all glad that she is redefining herself and taking another step towards fulfilling her destiny. Much love and light to you Chelsea and don't you dare stop writing!!

Reading is no doubt important for people who enjoy writing BUT I also think reading is equally important for people with no literary aspirations. Reading is knowledge, reading is current events, reading is understand and seeking answers. If you hate reading my advice is to try a new medium. Try a magazine, even Vogue or Interview, stay away from Tabloids (my girl Gala will explain). Try an audio book, anything to get some words into your mind that aren't your own, it's a refreshing experience!

Season Two & The Book // Orange Is The New Black // Done & Done

NO SPOILERS HERE, only praise for the hottest show on Netflix. OITNB is a show pushing people out of their comfort zones, challenging societal judgements - so thanks for that & thanks for entertaining the crap out of me :)

I have finished watching Season Two of Orange is the New Black on Netflix & it was everything we all hoped it would be. Full of drama, love, anger, remorse & intrigued!

My favorite part of the show is how well they paint the pictures of these women. Yes, they are locked up. Yes, that makes them criminals. But this show tells the stories of how they got there. CONTEXT is so important. CONTEXT IS LIFE!

I believe this so strongly that I will say it again, CONTEXT IS THE STUFF OF LIFE!! And seeing anyone as simply an inmate is not cool. No person is just one note, no person falls under just one title. OITNB does an amazing job reminding me that lesson applies to EVERYONE. Not just your friend who is a hardcore activist but also loves Doritos and drives a 99' Branco, or your uncle who is a priest but also loves shooting guns and drinking whiskey. Even criminals have a backstory, they all have their own plot lines, they are just as much a product of their environment as you are. Try with all of your might to remember that everyday, with each new person you interact with. Hold off judgement because you all not all knowing.

WORDS ABOUT THE BOOK

If you are into the show and enjoy reading a well written, expressive novel then READ IT, that is all I have to say.

Oh shit I have to say this one thing, final episode when the chubby guard tells off the nuns and expresses his feelings about Catholic I was dying. I identified very strongly to say the least haha. "Professional humiliators!" haha.

I only had to read the first ten pages to know that I had made the right decision in reading this novel, it tells a story that I could easily just watch on Netflix and be adequately in the know of the trendy Piper Kerman story. Kerman is an excellent writer and the story does not loose any luster the second time around because she paints such a vivid image of her experience.

Yeah I have already watched Season 1, my brother got me into it. He assured me that it's the kind of show I would enjoy. But all of a sudden the other day I had the urge to read the book, with all of the hype for Season 2 I just felt that it might enhance the new episodes if I had read the story as Piper Kerman intended it to be told.

I think it is important to support my fellow women, support the stories of other women. The world of entertainment doesn't always support stories with lead female plot lines and on top of that OITNB really dives deep into the facets of these women. Their stories are inspiring and so eye opening, it is truly a show that is pushing boundaries.

There are seven directors listed on IMDB and I am pretty sure only three of them are women. Out of the ten writers listed seven of them are women which are better stats and I am so glad the woman whose experience is being translated for entertainment has been on the writing staff for every episode.

I am not going to tell you anything, I am not going to be a spoiler but here is an article that talks about the real story; 5 Key Differences Between ‘Orange Is The New Black’ And The Reality That It Was Based Upon.

Yes sometimes I watch too much Netflix, and more times than not what I am watching has been directed by a man. So when a shows comes around that not only tells of layered women but also hires them as writers I am going to support that shit as many ways as I can. If you have Netflix give this show I click, give it a try whether you are a boy, girl, or gender confused - it is everyone's job to tell the world of entertainment that we need more stories about women, layered, dimensional women. We need more truth.

If you don't have Netflix give the book a try, if Orange is the New Black then books are the new magazines! :)
